Canada Citizenship Certificate Form Update: Grandparents’ Marriage Details Removed from CIT 0001

Applicants using the Application for a Citizenship Certificate (CIT 0001) should make sure they are working from the current version of the form.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) updated the CIT 0001 application package in August 2026. According to a comparison published by CIC News, the department briefly included dedicated fields requesting the date and place of marriage of an applicant’s grandparents and then removed those fields from the current version of the form.

Canada.ca confirms that CIT 0001 was updated in August 2026. IRCC has not published a separate notice explaining this specific change.

What Changed in the Citizenship Certificate Form?

CIC News reported that IRCC added dedicated grandparent marriage-detail fields to CIT 0001 on August 25, 2026, then removed those fields within approximately 48 hours.

The current application form no longer contains those dedicated grandparent marriage-detail fields. The current package should therefore be the reference point for anyone preparing a new proof of Canadian citizenship application.

Applicants should download a fresh copy of the application package directly from Canada.ca before filing rather than relying on a previously saved version.

Why Grandparents’ Records May Still Matter

The removal of a dedicated form field does not necessarily mean that information about a grandparent can never become relevant to a citizenship application.

IRCC’s citizenship certificate document checklist states that the department may ask for further information or documents while processing an application. Depending on the facts of a citizenship-by-descent claim, family records may still be relevant to establish identity, relationships, name changes or other parts of the documentary chain.

Applicants should therefore distinguish between information that is no longer specifically requested in a form field and information that may still be relevant to proving a particular citizenship claim.

What Applicants Should Do Before Applying

Applicants preparing a citizenship certificate application should:

• Download the current CIT 0001 form and document checklist from Canada.ca.
• Use the instructions in the current application package rather than relying on older downloaded copies.
• Provide complete and truthful information for every question that applies to their case.
• Keep supporting family records available in case they are relevant to the claim or requested during processing.
• Avoid assuming that a removed form field means the underlying family history can never matter.

Does This Change Citizenship Eligibility?

The form update itself does not create or remove Canadian citizenship eligibility.

Eligibility for proof of Canadian citizenship depends on the Citizenship Act and the facts of the applicant’s citizenship claim. CIT 0001 is the application used to request a citizenship certificate that confirms citizenship status.

Applicants with complex multi-generation citizenship-by-descent cases may need to examine the family and documentary history carefully even when a particular detail is no longer requested in a dedicated field.
