Canada’s Haiti Temporary Immigration Measures Reach October 27, 2026 Deadline
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) currently lists October 27, 2026 as the end date for certain temporary immigration measures for Haitian nationals, passport holders and eligible family members in Canada. The deadline concerns specific public policies, not every immigration program involving Haiti. The official guidance reviewed for this article did not confirm a further extension.
Who may be covered by the temporary measures?
The published IRCC guidance includes Haitian nationals and passport holders in Canada with valid temporary resident status. It also describes eligibility for certain family members of Canadian citizens or permanent residents who left Haiti on or after March 1, 2024, arrived in Canada on or before April 26, 2024 and meet other conditions.
What types of applications are involved?
Eligible applicants may be able to apply from within Canada for an open work permit, study permit, visitor record or replacement temporary resident permit, with exemptions from specified fees. The official guidance also describes separate measures for some permanent residents affected by provincial health coverage waiting periods and certain Haitian nationals outside Canada with permanent residence applications already in progress. These groups have different requirements.
What happens to applications submitted before the deadline?
The published temporary public policies state that applications received while the policies are in effect and before their expiry or revocation can continue to be processed under those policies. This should not be interpreted as permission to apply after expiry under the same special rules. Applicants should check the precise policy, eligibility criteria and current IRCC instructions before taking action.
What should applicants do now?
Review the official IRCC page, confirm your current status and document expiry dates, and determine which application and supporting evidence apply to your circumstances. Do not assume an extension has been announced simply because an older guidance page remains accessible. Consult an authorized immigration professional for case-specific questions.
