Canada Extends Ebola-Related Immigration and Border Measures Through September 28, 2026

The Government of Canada extended temporary Ebola-related border measures for another 30 days on August 28, 2026. The measures are now in place through September 28, 2026.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) also maintains temporary immigration measures affecting certain foreign nationals whose last country of residence in their immigration application was the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda or South Sudan.

What Canada Extended on August 28

The Public Health Agency of Canada said travellers entering Canada who have been in affected areas within the previous 21 days and have symptoms of Ebola disease will be isolated at a medical facility on arrival. People without symptoms will continue to receive a health assessment and may be required to quarantine for 21 days.

Canada said there were no reported Ebola cases in Canada at the time of the August 28 statement and described the overall risk to people in Canada as low.

How the IRCC Immigration Measures Work

IRCC’s special-measures page states that immigration documents are temporarily suspended for foreign nationals who listed one of the affected countries as the last country of residence in their immigration application.

Foreign nationals who were living outside the affected countries when they applied are not affected by this specific immigration-document measure.

Affected people who were notified by IRCC can use the department’s crisis web form to request an exemption and provide supporting documents.

What This Means for Applicants

This measure does not apply to every national of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda or South Sudan. The IRCC page specifically ties the immigration-document suspension to the last country of residence listed in the immigration application.

Applicants who believe they may be affected should review the current IRCC special-measures page and any direct notice they receive from the department before making travel or immigration decisions.
